I received an e-mail from a student who finished a research project 
about African American men who want to teach and wanted us to post the 
research report. Unfortunately, the student's e-mail was deleted. If 
they could resend their information we'd be happy to post his research

2) Hunt is on for more men to lead classrooms
If a woman can drive a tank in Baghdad, why can't a guy change a diaper 
at an early childhood education center?" said Kitt Cox, coordinator at 
the Birth to Three Family Center in Ipswich and one of the few men in 
the early education field. "We should be showing kids there are 
different things they can be when they grow up, and it shouldn't be

I don't remember having a single black male teacher until I reached 
college. After graduating from Cornell University, I joined Teach For

4) Interviewing over 130 teens for summer program
In an article about the shortage of male teachers, at the very end, is 
a sentence about a man who single-handedly changed how a city has a 
summer program. When Justs Holm went looking for teen recruits to work 
in Cambridge day care centers, he said, he signed up more than 130 male 
teenagers interested in working with kids. He ended up placing 35, as 
many as he had space for, in day care centers around the city. One

5) A bit of history about male teachers in the United Kingdom
It's always interesting to know that our work isn't new. There has been 
groups of men and women working to have more men teach. Even as far

6) Plan to revitalize a European men in childcare network
The next World Forum Networking Project has been selected. The project, 
Plan to Revitalize a European Men in Childcare Network, will be led by 
Lauk Woltring from The Netherlands, together with Timothy Moran from 
Ireland and Kenny Spence from the United Kingdom. Read the details:

7) Research - Male Students Referred to Special Education More Than 
Female Students
Read about a post from back in 2005 from a doctoral student: Male 
students make up approximately 70% of the two largest categories in 
special ed. Specific Learning disability & Emotional Disturbance, when 
there are little male role models in special education classrooms. 
California has 28,000 special ed teachers of which maybe 4,000 are men

8) Male director hiring male teachers in Australia
Here's another re-post from 2005: I am a male Director of a long day 
care centre. It is being built at the moment and will be operating in 8 
weeks. I'll be looking to employ one or two male workers as part of a 
team of ten. In the Australian context, this will be fairly innovative 
to have a few male workers together. I've worked in early childhood 
services for 14 years, never working or studying with another male.

9) Saving our black boys
Some disturbing data and a hopeful program that needs your support: 
Only 47% of Black males in America graduate from high school. The 
average 17-year-old Black child has the reading and math scores of the 
average 14- year-old White child. One out of three Black boys born 
after 2001 will spend time in jail or prison. An estimated 50% of Black 
girls between 14- and 19- years-old have contracted a sexually 
transmitted disease. Between 65% to 70% of Black children are born into 
single-parent, female-headed households. Read about an effective
