1) Order the new DVD about male teachers - Expect male involvement
Expect Male Involvement: Recruiting & Retaining Men in Early Childhood
Education. This is really an excellent DVD to show at conferences,
college and university classes. It provides a comprehensive story about
the issues around gender diversity. Find out how you can purchase a
copy: http://www.menteach.org/node/1085

2) Needed: More black male teachers in Florida
The Ketterlinus Elementary first-graders are typical 6- and
7-year-olds. A little giggly. A little antsy. And a lot chatty. Their
teacher is anything but typical in this St. Augustine school. 'You'd
better tighten up,' Curtis Lewis, 27, tells a couple of boys getting a
little too rambunctious.

In a school that has only three male teachers, Lewis is the only one
who is black.

3) Correction: Additional movies about male teachers suggested by
readers
Last month we sent out the incorrect link. Here is the correct one:

4) What do children think: Does it matter if your teacher is male?
What do the children think? Read comments from children from Europe
about their beliefs about having a male teacher:

5) Mayor's Summer Youth Employment program is a great success!
Mr. Holm has been working to recruit young high school boys to work in
his preschool through the Mayor's Summer Youth Program. Others are
working to replicate the program in major cities using Workforce
funding that is available every summer.

He tells his story: In January 2008 I approached the Office of
Workforce Development - a City Department of the Department of Human
Services Programs about designing a special program to recruit and hire
young men to work in preschool programs offered in the City. Read the
rest of his story: http://www.menteach.org/node/1144

6) Retired troops gain career in classrooms
The three years John Roberson spent as an Army drill sergeant were not
enough to satisfy his itch to teach. 'I often thought, 'Well, if I
enjoy this, being an instructor, I might enjoy being a schoolteacher at
some point in my life,' the retired sergeant major said:

7) Report from Men in Early Childhood Education in Austria
Lately, the field of Early Childhood Education (ECE) has been widely
debated in Austria. Raising requirements for Early Childhood Educators
to the tertiary level, making a Bache-lor's degree mandatory, is one of
the major issues. Another issue gaining a lot of attention is last
year's decision by several Austrian provinces to keep pre-school year
free of charge. In parallel, the importance of men in Early Childhood
Education is increasingly acknowledged in public and gives new impetus
to the field.

8) Student in Malaysia doing a Male Teacher Survey
I'm student and majoring in Early Childhood Education. Now I'm working
on my Project Paper: Male Teacher Involvement in ECE. You see his
survey on the website and also read about his classroom in Malaysia:

9) Today's lesson: Courage - a soldier and a teacher
Brockton fourth-graders learn about sacrifice as their teacher leaves
the classroom to begin his tour of duty in Iraq. He didn't look quite
like their teacher anymore. Peter Farley stood in front of his
fourth-grade class dressed in his Army boots and camouflage gear, beret
in hand. Read his story and how he says good bye to the children:
