1) Order the new DVD about male teachers - Expect male involvement
Expect Male Involvement: Recruiting & Retaining Men in Early Childhood
Education. This is really an excellent DVD to show at conferences,
college and university classes. It provides a comprehensive story about
the issues around gender diversity. Find out how you can purchase a
copy: http://www.menteach.org/node/1085

2) Why Men in Preschool Makes Sense
Recently, Lisa Guernsey at Early Ed Watch did a 5Qs Interview for
Inside Pre-K. It is a series [J.M. Holland] has been doing mostly on
authors writing about preschool. She was happy to do it but asked if,
as part of a series at Early Ed Watch on Head Start, he would do one
for her in return. When someone asks you tough questions about
something you care about, you want to just spill your heart on the
page: Read J.M. Holland's editorial about male teachers:

3) Good male elementary teachers find good job market
Schools everywhere are always looking to hire good qualified teachers.
But finding an abundance of male candidates can be a challenge.

When schools set out to hire new teachers, they're not just looking for
those who can teach. They also want role models, both in and out of the
classroom, which is why the shortage of male teachers is particularly
troublesome.

One Robberson Elementary kindergarten class looks like many others.
But, if you take a look beyond the books and blocks, sometime the kids
don't even recognize what separates their class from many others:
Christopher Smith is their teacher. Read the story:

4) Getting guys hooked on teaching young children
This commentary addresses the following questions: Why do so few men
teach in the earlier grades? What can be done to entice men to teach
younger students? Why we should we bother?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2008, males represent
only 2.4 and 18.8 percent of teachers in preschool/kindergarten and
elementary/middle school, respectively. Forty-four percent of secondary
school teachers are male. Why do so few men teach in the earlier
grades? What can be done to entice men to teach younger students? Why
should we bother? Since the early 1990s, these and related questions
have received increasing attention in both the popular press and
academic circles. Read the rest of the interesting article:

5) Principal seeks to study perceptions about male teachers
I'm a male principal of one of the largest K-3 buildings in Missouri. I
have roughly 1000 students, and 80 teachers. I have 2 male teachers on
staff, one in 3rd and one PE teacher. Besides them, myself, I have a
male custodian and a male food service worker.

6) About men in child care by Mr. Rogers
'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' was the longest-running children's
program on public television, Rogers spoke at the Yale University Child
Development Center, New Haven, Comecticut, in December 1988. That talk
was edited for publication in Child Care ActioNews, a newsletter I
receive through the Child Care Action Campaign. Read the speech from
back in 1988: http://www.menteach.org/node/1177

7) Paid Summer Internship to teach for high school and college students
Breakthrough Saint Paul (and other major cities) are looking for a
diverse group of talented undergraduate and high school students
(juniors/seniors) to teach and lead at an innovative academic summer
program for high-potential, under-resourced middle school students in
Saint Paul. Breakthrough provides paid summer internships, complete
with training and classroom teaching experience.

8) First time in history: A dad leads PTA
In 2009, for the first time in U.S. history, the parent in charge of
the Parent Teacher Association will be a dad. Charles J. Saylors took
office as president of the 5.5 million member organization in June,
putting a further dent in the stereotype that has taken hold in recent
years of moms who leave the workforce and devote their impressive --
and sometimes excessive -- energies to the PTA. Read the entire story:

9) I am the King of the Four Year Olds!
Roberto Reggio, a veteran male early educator drowned under a full moon
off Kahala Beach in Hawaii on May 7, 2009. He was creative, committed,
and passionate about the impact he was able to have as a teacher of
young children, as a musician, and as a presenter in professional
settings. Among his many contributions, Roberto helped to plan,
presented at, and wrote about the HAEYC Men in Education Network
(M.E.N.) Retreats. Read the story that he wrote that was read at his
Memorial Service: http://www.menteach.org/node/1170
