BELL Overview

BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life) is a community-based, non-profit organization that works to increase the educational achievements, self-esteem, and life opportunities of children living in low-income, urban communities. The BELL After School program is designed to improve children’s academic performance by building their basic skills in reading, writing and math; by providing a safe and structured learning environment; and by connecting them with positive adult role models.  BELL After School is offered in elementary schools in New York City; Boston; Baltimore; Charlotte and Montgomery County, MD.

BELL is making a difference in the lives of children and families. Standardized tests indicate that BELL scholars gain the equivalent of 10 months of classroom instruction in literacy and math skills during the after-school program.  For the past five years, 100% of BELL scholars who started the program in the “failing” category advanced to a higher performance category by the end of the year.  In addition to the academic gains, our scholars’ confidence and expectations for the future rose significantly – 100% of our first class of scholars are currently in college.
