1) Good for the goose, why not the gander? Irish men caring for young children
As a self-employed joiner, Co Down man Patrick Coulter used to spend his working life organizing sub contractors and chasing clients for unpaid bills. Now he earns a wage from, among other duties, icing fairy cakes, putting plasters on knees and telling stories. The 42-year-old is one of only two registered male childminders in Northern Ireland and he currently looks after a three-year-old girl, a seven-year-old boy and his own seven-year-old son in his home in Mayobridge, near Newry. In a couple of weeks he will add nappy changing to his daily tasks when he starts taking care of his youngest charge an eight-month-old baby girl. Read the article: /node/1558

2) Vietnamese male kindergarten teacher one of a kind
Hoan was one of two male students among thousands of females but his determination showed men can be kindergarten teachers too. Lai Cong Hoan, 29, begins his work day by singing Chau Di Mau Giao (I go to kindergarten) with students in his Vu Ninh Commune kindergarten classroom in northern Thai Binh Province. Hoan stands in front of the blackboard, clapping his hands to the song’s tune. Wide-eyed students sit on wooden chairs and sing along with him. This morning’s lesson is about enhancing the sense of music in three-year-old children. The image of children learning about music is common at pre-schools, but finding a male teacher singing and playing with kids is quite out of the ordinary in Viet Nam. Hoan is the only male kindergarten teacher in Thai Binh Province. Read the article: /node/1563

3) Male teacher ‘really humbled’ by $25,000 national award
Dexter Chaney began his morning as usual. After a breakfast of toast and fruit, he headed to work at the city’s Ryerson Elementary School, where he planned to jump-start his third-grade students after the holiday break. Part of the morning, he found out, was going to be taken up by an assembly. What he didn’t know was that he was the guest of honor. Read the entire story: /node/1565

5) Pupils make more effort with male teachers as they are seen as ‘more fair’
Pupils try harder for male teachers, according to an official study. They make more effort to please them, display greater self-esteem and are more likely to believe they are being treated fairly. The findings are particularly significant as more than a quarter of primary schools do not have a single male teacher. With the number of male secondary school teachers also dwindling, it is feared that some youngsters could go throughout their entire education without experiencing the benefits of being taught by a man. Researchers from Westminster University, the London School of Economics and the graduate business school INSEAD carried out an experiment involving 1,200 pupils aged 12-13 in 29 schools. 6) Math educator recognized for excellence
Thomas S. Stone Elementary fifth-graders standing before Michael Gilchrist’s class on Monday morning did more than present their answers to fractions problems: They also defended them. For Gilchrist, understanding material means being able to explain the correct answers, not just give them — and his methods were recognized when Gilchrist won November’s countywide Teacher of the Month award after Marilyn Moreno, the regional superintendent, nominated him. Gilchrist said the award is a reflection of the hard work of teachers and staff in the school after the past few years. The Mount Rainier school has struggled to meet annual state-mandated testing benchmarks during the last three years. Read the article: /node/1571

8) First male teacher graduated with Growing Our Own Teachers in Hawaiian program
Danison Sarmiento was a milestone in the Growing our Own Teachers on Kaua’i program, Thursday at the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay meeting in Princeville. Since its inception, the program has already entered more than two dozen elementary school teachers into the Kaua’i school system. Sarmiento of Kekaha is the first male teacher scheduled to graduate in May, said Dr. Kani Blackwell, the program’s coordinator from the University of Hawai’i. “We have seven candidates here today, and before getting here, I spent a good part of my morning working with seven more candidates in Kapa’a,” Blackwell said. “We are in good shape for the future. We’ll have seven graduating in May and another seven to fill their ranks.” The seven candidates presented by Blackwell at the Rotary Club’s Wednesday meeting are recipients of scholarships generated by the club to help them during their semester of student teaching. 9) Male primary teacher numbers in Wales
The number of male primary teachers in Wales currently stands at 2,140, compared to 11,807 women. Children’s Commissioner for Wales Keith Towler said the trend was worrying. According to figures from the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW), women make up 84.7% of registered primary school teachers. Mr. Towler said children need positive male role models, especially during their early years. He said a whole generation could be left without them during their formative years in school. The number of male teachers is even fewer in nursery education, with only one registered in Wales in December 2009. Ben Dobson, 25, qualified three months ago and is a nursery teacher at Alderman Davies Primary School in Neath. Read the article and watch the video interview: /node/1579
