1) Male teachers in Utah Try to Live on Teacher’s Salary
The fifth grade students in Brad Ericksen’s class know what their teacher will be doing after school today. They can tell by his outfit — a navy blue shirt and khaki pants.
He’ll be working at Walmart.
“I work there to make ends meet,” says Ericksen, whose wife stays home with their three kids. The fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School works between 20 and 25 hours a week at his second job on top of working at least 40 hours a week as a teacher. 3) Some Percentages of Men in Education are increasing.
MenTeach: One of the interesting things about working for many years on an issue is that you can watch for trends and changes. We are noticing some changes in the percentage of men going into education. Below is the 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics data about some education jobs. If you compare the percentages and numbers from 2012 to 2013 there is a significant increase in percentage of Assistant Teachers. In 2012 the percentage of men was 8.9% in 2013 it was 10.8%. Elementary & Middle school has increased from 18.6% to 19% in 2013. This is a smaller increase but if you know that we are dealing with 19% of a 3 million, it’s not small numbers. [MenTeach: Don Piburn has be working in early education for years. He has been instrumental in recruiting and retaining men teachers through his work in Hawaii hosting MenTeach retreats, serving on the AEYC affiliate board and being a founding father of the World Forum Men in Early Childhood Education (MECE). These articles were written 10 years ago and are still relevant to our work today.]
I work as a consultant to community preschools that include children with social, emotional, and behavior challenges throughout our State. Because the goal of my initial visit is to observe typical classroom routines, at first I am purposefully low-key and rather unresponsive toward the children. One or several children will usually ask if I am somebody’s Daddy, but then there is a distinct deviation in how they react to me dependant on whether there are fathers, fathering figures, or male staff members actively involved in their early childhood programs. 5) Diversity in the Classroom: How to Solve the Black Male Teacher Shortage
America’s K-12 students have never been more diverse, with students of color now outnumbering white students. But that diversity ends at the front of the classroom.
As a group, U.S. teachers are still overwhelmingly white and female—and black men are among those most underrepresented in the teaching ranks. To remedy that situation, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan set a 2015 goal to add thousands more black male teachers in U.S. schools. But while some progress has been made in support of programs working to recruit and place young black male teachers in classrooms, Duncan says there is still more work to be done.
“We want to have world class teachers in every classroom, there is nothing more important, but for me, it’s also important that those teachers reflect the diversity of our nation,” Secretary Duncan told NBC News. “You can go to far too many elementary schools around the nation and still not see a teacher of color.”

7) Adam Buckingham – Trash to Treasures founder – died February 1
MenTeach: It is with true regret that I wanted to tell readers that we have lost a creative, talented, unique man in the early education profession. Adam Buckingham of New Zealand died on February 1, 2015. I met Adam more than 10 years ago through e-mail correspondence. He wanted to use some of my early MenTeach work and asked me about it. We struck up a long distrance friendship – he in New Zealand and me in the United States. Read more about Adam’s life: /node/2568

8) Numbers of men increases at a Wisconsin University
[MenTeach: It’s been great watching one person increase the numbers of men at her university education program. If she can do it at a university in the middle of Wisconsin, we can all make these efforts and see an increase in the number of men enrolled.]
Here’s my exciting news for the beginning of this semester:
In my Intro to ECE class this semester I have a total of 24 students, 7 which are male.
Makes the total number of ECE males up to 17 in the program.

10) Closing the Gender Gap: 20 Top Teacher Ed Colleges for Men
[MenTeach: This is an interesting site that offers summary information about the states and universities with the highest percentage of men in education programs.]
Traditionally, most teachers and teacher education students have been women. However, an increasing number of male college students are enrolling in teacher education classes and choosing education as a major. Some teacher education departments are now seeing graduating classes where men are actually the majority. See the percentages: /node/2567
