Type “gay” into the search box for the Men Teach forums and you will come up with many discussions about the “fear” or “risk” of being assumed gay. There is a confusing pardigm here. Saying that we have to protect men from this dangerous assumption, assumes that all men in ece are or should be straight, and that gay male teachers have some sort of a deficit. Gay men are also men and gay men also teach. 10 percent of a male teacher’s students will grow up to be gay or lesbian. If a teacher believes that being gay, or even assumed gay is terrible, then perhaps he needs to reflect on that bias in the context of his peers, families and children in his care.
